Bridge Design

Bridge foundations: why geotechnical data drives the design

Foundations are often the largest and most uncertain cost in a bridge. Reliable geotechnical data turns that uncertainty into an economical design.

Spread footings vs piles

Shallow footings suit rock or dense ground close to the surface. Soft soils, scour risk or high loads usually need bored or driven piles.

Abutments and approaches

Soft ground under approach embankments can settle and push on piles. Ground improvement, lightweight fill or reinforced soil walls control this.

Investigation scope

  • Boreholes at each abutment and pier
  • Rock coring and strength testing
  • Groundwater and scour assessment
  • Pile load testing where warranted
