Double storey house structural design in Brisbane

A second storey changes the structure significantly. Loads must travel cleanly from the roof through the upper floor to the footings, and open-plan living areas often need hidden steel to make that work.

Load paths and transfer beams

When upper walls do not sit over lower walls, transfer beams carry the load across. Getting these right early avoids deep bulkheads and late redesigns.

Suspended floors

Upper floors may be timber joists, engineered I-joists, steel or concrete. Span, vibration, wet areas and services all influence the choice.

Footings and bracing

Heavier loads mean larger footings, and taller walls need more bracing for wind. Both are checked against the site class and wind category.
