Investigations

What drives the cost of a geotechnical investigation

Two geotechnical quotes for similar sites can look very different. The difference usually comes from the scope needed to answer the design question safely, not from the hourly rate.

The main cost drivers

  • Site access — tight backyards may need hand augers or small track rigs
  • Number and depth of boreholes or test pits
  • Rock or groundwater that needs coring or monitoring
  • Laboratory testing such as reactivity, CBR and strength tests
  • In-situ testing such as DCP, SPT or plate load tests
  • The complexity of the report and design advice required

Why a cheaper scope can cost more

Too few boreholes leave the designer guessing, which usually means conservative footings or surprises during construction.

How to get an accurate quote

Send the site address, proposed development, approximate building loads and any previous reports. We will recommend a scope that fits the risk.
