Structural Systems

Timber, steel or concrete: choosing a structural system in Brisbane

There is no single best structural material. The right system depends on spans, loads, exposure, budget and what local builders do well.

Timber

Economical and fast for houses, with good local trade skills. Needs termite and moisture protection and has span limits.

Steel

Ideal for long spans, open plans and industrial buildings. Corrosion protection is important near the coast.

Concrete

Durable, fire-resistant and suited to basements, multi-storey buildings and retaining structures. Heavier, so footings are larger.

Mixed systems

Many homes combine a concrete slab, timber framing and hidden steel beams — using each material where it works best.
